Lower Grades Academics at Darlington: Sparking Curiosity and Inspiring Growth
At Darlington, our Lower Grades program for third through fifth graders introduces new challenges while nurturing the innate curiosity of each child. We believe that by fostering individuality, collaboration, and creativity, we help students develop a lifelong love of learning.
A Curriculum Rooted in Exploration
Exploration is a cornerstone of our curriculum. Grade-level and full lower grades exploratory classes promote active, hands-on learning. Whether through engaging STEM activities, innovative MakerSpace projects, or imaginative play, students thrive as they work together to solve problems and think creatively.
Our lower grades students enjoy a diverse range of classes including:
Art
Music
Spanish
Math
Science
Language Arts
Regular visits to the library further enrich their learning experiences, encouraging a love of reading and research.
Innovative Learning Tools
We integrate technology seamlessly into every child’s education. Third- and fourth-graders use iPads to enhance their classroom learning and collaborative efforts. In fifth grade, students transition to MacBook Airs, preparing them for more advanced projects and middle school coursework.
Orton-Gillingham Trained Educators
All Darlington lower grades teachers and teaching assistants are trained as Orton-Gillingham Classroom Educators. This specialized training, rooted in developmental neuroscience, equips our educators to deliver an optimal learning experience tailored to the needs of each student.
The Joy of Exploratory Classes
Exploratory classes are a highlight of the week for our third through fifth graders. These sessions bring students together as a community to delve into topics through hands-on activities. From studying weather patterns through art and science to learning about current events via STEM activities—even incorporating dance parties—exploration and fun go hand-in-hand.
A Student-Centered Schedule
Our daily schedule is carefully designed to match the way students naturally learn. With longer periods between transitions and highly engaged teachers, students can immerse themselves in projects, explore subjects deeply, and gain the confidence to see their work through to completion.
Prepared for the Future
Children leave our lower grades program ready for the challenges of middle school. They carry with them a strong foundation of knowledge, critical thinking skills, and the confidence to pursue their unique passions and talents.
